BARRIER VERDICT: Coolly synthetic rather than cosy, but great fit considering the useful windproofing.
TRANSFER VERDICT: Quite pricey and feels synthetic, but great fit and finishing quality, and wicks fast.

Pearl Izumi's baselayers offer decent windbeating or conventional performance albeit with a distincly synthetic feel. Both tops feature Pearl Izumi's exceptionally lightweight and stretchy P.R.O. transfer fabric, which makes for a great fit - figure hugging yet totally mobile. The fabric wicks well too, but has a cold, synthetic and clammy feel even when dry. While the price is high, the construction is first class, with a fully stitched double collar, flatlocked seams and a locking zip on the Transfer top. The Barrier versions also get a waterproof front panel for wind protection.
