BikePark Wales opened its doors to the public for the very first time this weekend and as one of the sponsors of this exciting and ambitious project, Madison were in attendance.
Yes, spending the weekend at the UK’s most anticipated trail openings is a very tough job, but someone has to do it!
Driving up to Merthyr Tydfill on Friday evening, we awoke bright and early to arrive on site at 7 am to get set up for the weekend. Tea was very much in order as we were all too early to be able to grab breakfast at our hotels. Thankfully the fantastic food on offer at the BikePark Wales canteen kept us well fuelled all weekend!
Shimano are one of the official sponsors of BikePark Wales and so our Shimano tech crew were in attendance.
Over the weekend the team were offering free tune-ups and repairs to riders to help them shuttling all day long! With descents running close to 8-10 minutes in length, there were quite a few spongy brakes towards the end of the day, but a quick bleed kept stopping power at an optimum.
Events like this are always remembered for the freebies and we did not disappoint! Free Shimano shoe bags were an ideal giveaway item that no doubt meant many riders went home with much cleaner cars then they would normally. However, inside these shoe bags was a very special golden ticket, which gave the holder the chance to take home a full Shimano Deore XT groupset.
With hoards of riders turning up first thing, it wasn’t long before one lucky rider found the golden ticket.
Inside the shoe bags were the highly-coveted Park Tool bottle opener, a nifty addition to anyone’s Park Tool collection.
The workshop at BikePark Wales is nestled within the visitor centre and is open for all to views the team working on bikes and making repairs. Like any self-respecting workshop, the BikePark Wales workshop is fully kitted out with Park Tool.
Elsewhere in the impressive visitor centre you’ll find an array of Shimano products, all fully stocked to keep riders rolling, whether you need a new set of shoes, a bottom bracket or crankset.
Now, being at one of the UK’s best trails meant we were all itching to get out and ride! With an efficient uplift service we were able to take a quick breaks throughout the weekend to get in a few runs, which we captured on our GoPro Hero3 Black Edition aboard a Saracen Ariel 142.
A fantastic weekend and fantastic weather, mixed with some amazing trails and large groups of enthusiastic riders made for a great event.
