Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team always appreciates support from local individuals and businesses. Recently the need for a full face mountain bike helmet to assist with first aid training became apparent. After an appeal to several businesses, Ian Carter from Madison in Stanmore offered to send us a Bell full face helmet, which we were delighted to accept. Pete Roberts, Team Leader of NNPMRT commented that, “… with the increase in mountain biking activity in Northumberland and the number of Rescue Covers for organised mountain bike events we felt the need to be fully au fait with the construction and safe removal of a helmet to be an important part of the training for all the Team, especially our ‘Medics’. We are indebted to Madison for supplying us with a helmet for us to practice with “ We frequently deliver first aid cover to mountain bike events throughout our area. Kielder and Kidland mountain bike courses run several high level events throughout the year. The frequency of injuries is low but our Team needs to be fully trained to deal with the potential injuries that may result from high speed crashes. Safe and prompt removal of a mountain bike helmet is paramount in such circumstances. So far we have used the helmet in two training sessions: during our monthly training session at our training facility in Northumbria Police Headquarters and also with specialist first aid team members. Allan White, Team Medical Officer, commented on the usefulness of having a real mountain bike helmet to practice on: “Full face helmets are an essential item of safety equipment in downhill mountain biking but their safe removal without aggravating any possible neck injury is a skill that needs practice. Thanks to Madison Cycles we now have the opportunity to practice this skill.” Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team would like to thank Madison for their generosity. Having high quality and up-to-date equipment enables us as a team to further our skills and improve the standard of care we can offer our casualties.
